Where can you get married in Big Sur?
Big Sur has so much to offer, and your Big Sur wedding will be no different. When thinking through your Big Sur elopement, we recommend thinking of your ceremony and reception separately. Ceremony locations can often take place in the beautiful natural scenery you often see pictured. Between the redwood forests and the ocean cliffs located in Big Sur, there is a lot for couples to consider. Big Sur elopement locations range from state parks to various local venues, and each come with their own pros and cons.
State Park Big Sur Elopements
Eloping in one of the many state parks in Big Sur is an excellent option for couples drawn to the dramatic scenery of the area. Here are some important features of these Big Sur elopement locations:
- Access to the best views
- Budget-friendly
- Ideal for fewer guests (up to 10)
- Less private
- More weather-prone
Garappata State Park

This State park is one of the easier spots to access along the coastal highway. This location is ideal for those looking for the dramatic geography of coastal cliffs. Perfect for you and a few guests, this Big Sur wedding location has beautiful coastal views. We do recommend working with a seasoned photographer to scout locations, as many sites may not be well-known by the public.
Elopements at Garappata State park require a $400 permit for 1 hour and up to 25 people. There is also a special events coordinator available through the park system that can walk couples through any requirements to host a wedding in the park.
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is an ideal state park option for those looking for Redwood scenery. That being said, this location and other redwood locations can be a bit tricky. Spots are somewhat limited, and the locations themselves are limited within the park. This is perfect for a couple looking to hike to their location. It is also recommended to work with a local photographer for help scouting locations.
For elopements at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, permits are $300 for 4 hours and up to 10 guests. There are also photography-specific permits required, available Monday-Thursday. Necessary permits for elopements can be applied up to 6 months in advance. Permits requested after 45 days advanced notice are subject to additional fees. Permits are available through the California Parks and Recreation Department.
Pfeiffer Beach (not a state park)

Pfeiffer Beach, while not a California state park, is a great location option for those looking for a Big Sur beach wedding. Access is $12 per car, although if the parking lot is full, access is denied until other guests depart. That being said, there is no permit fee, making this one of the only places to elope in Big Sur that is free!
Something important to consider at this location is weather, as flooding can prevent access to this beach. Connect with local experts at Wedy to discuss backup options for your Big Sur elopement locations.
Big Sur Wedding Venues
In addition to these State Park options, there are also various Venue options located in Big Sur. Some important things to consider with these options are:
- Easier and more consistent access for Redwood ceremonies
- More expensive
- More private and guaranteed access
- Better accessibility for guests
- Ideal for slightly larger parties (up to 25 guests)
With so many venues to choose from including Glen Oaks Big Sur elopements and Ventana Big Sur elopements, we highly recommend connecting with one of our Wedy lead planners.
